This one-of-a-kind
journal is upcycled from a discarded 1978 encyclopedia
year book.
I attached an owl from a discarded 1970's piece of jewelry (my sister's I believe) to the cover. Braid from the 1970's not only embellishes the cover but also serves to anchor the blank pages inside to the journal. (I know this braid is from the 1970's because I used it to jazz up the bottom of my jeans at the time. Unfortunately it shrunk when washed while the jeans did not.) I bound the seven signatures of pages (a term for groups of pages folded together) to the book cover using long and kettle stitches. These are visible on the spine over the ribbon anchors. |

The pages of the journal are made
from "water-stressed" paper. To water stress I
hand tear each page along a straight edge and then dip
it in acrylic-colored water for a few minutes.
In this case I started with gold colored paper and
dipped it into red-tinted water. I then hang the
page on a folding clothes rack to dry. I like
not only the look of water stressing but also the
sound and feel when I write on it. A
multi-sensory experience! |

I include out-of-context quotes from the
original book on several of the pages. These can be used as writing prompts. |

Writers may react for or against the
prompts or ignore them all together. |

Or
they may use the quote as the starting point for a
meandering thought journey. |

Note: I give the page number of each quote, when available, and list the publication information on the last page of the journal. | |

I copied my original
watercolor painting onto cardstock paper and used it
to line the front and back covers and to reinforce the
spine.

On
the last page is my unique signature medallion, which
also indicates the year I made the book. The journal has attached beaded ribbon bookmarks. |
