This one-of-a-kind
journal is upcycled from a copy of the novel Comeback
by Dick Francis.
I ornamented the cover with a vintage photo and a selection of vintage buttons. The decorative ribbon not only adorns the cover but serves to anchor the binding stitches. I bound the eight signatures of pages (a term for groups of pages folded together) to the book cover using long and kettle stitches. These are visible on the spine. |

The pages of the journal are made
from "water-stressed" paper. To water stress I
hand tear each page to the size of the book
cover. I then dip the individual pages in
acrylic-colored water for a few minutes and hang them
on a folding clothes rack to dry. I like not
only the look of water stressing but also the sound
and feel when I write on it. A multi-sensory
experience! |

include out-of-context quotes from the original book
on several of the pages for use as writing prompts. Writers
may react for or against the prompts (or ignore them all
together). |

I used
pages from the original text on the inside covers and to
reinforce the spine. On the inside back cover is my unique signature medallion, which also states the year I made the journal. The journal has an attached ribbon bookmark with a patterned clay bead. |

features. Its dimensions are approximately 9.25" x 6" x 1.5". |
