This is a
one-of-a-kind journal upcycled from a discarded 1957
book, "Justine" by Lawrence Durrell. On the
front cover is my original acrylic painting of an
imagined Justine.
I bound the pages into the book cover using a cross-variant of long and kettle stitches. These are visible on the spine over ribbons, which serve to anchor the cover to the book block (a term meaning all the pages of a book as a whole). The book block contains six signatures (a term for groups of pages). |

The pages of the journal are made from
water-stressed paper. I water stress each page
individually by first hand tearing the paper to the size
of the book, then dipping it in water colored with
acrylic paint for a few minutes, and last drying it on a
clothes drying rack. I like not only the look of
water-stress pages but also the sound and feel of the
paper when I write on it. |

I include out-of-context quotes from the original book on several of the pages. These can be used as writing prompts. |

Writers may react for or against the prompts or ignore them all together. |

meandering thought journey. (Note: I give the page number of each quote, when available, and list the publication information on the last page of the journal.) |

The paper for the
inside front and back covers is a copy onto cardstock
of my original watercolor and pen painting. I
also use this paper to reinforce the spine.

On the last page of the journal is my unique signature medallion, which also indicates the year I made the book. The journal has an attached beaded ribbon bookmark. |

I include a paper bookmark listing the book's main features. Dimensions of the journal are approximately 8.25" x 5.5" x 1". |
