This one-of-a-kind
journal is upcycled from a discarded, damaged Franklin
Edition of Charles Dickens' "Nicholas Nickleby."
I preserved the original decorative cover as I found it but added decorative ribbon to anchor the new, blank pages on the inside to the cover. I bound the six signatures of pages (a term for groups of pages folded together) to the book cover using long and kettle stitches. These are visible on the spine. |

The pages of the journal are made
from "water-stressed" paper. To water stress I
hand tear each page to the size of the book cover and
then dip it in acrylic-colored water for a few
minutes. I then hang it on a folding clothes
rack to dry. I like not only the look of water
stressing but also the sound and feel when I write on
it. A multi-sensory experience! |

I include out-of-context quotes from the
original book on several of the pages. These can be used as writing prompts. |

Writers may react for or against the
prompts or ignore them all together. |

Or
they may use the quote as the starting point for a

Note: I give the page number of each quote, when available, and list the publication information on the last page of the journal. | |

I used a copy onto
cardstock of my original paint, marker, and pen
mandala drawing on the inside front and back covers
and to reinforce the spine.

|
On
the drawing and on the last page are my unique signature
medallions, which also indicates the year I made the
drawing and the book respectively. Because the title page of the book had no copyright date, I included an inscription from the original book with a date of 1898. The journal has an attached beaded ribbon bookmark. |

include a paper bookmark listing the book's main
features. Dimensions of the journal are approximately 8" x 5.5" x 1.25". |
