This one-of-a-kind
journal is upcycled from a rescued copy of the 1915
novel "Ruggles of Red Gap" by Harry Leon Wilson.
I enhanced the cover with a vintage photograph of an unknown rough-and-ready looking couple. I further embellished the cover with yellow and white decorative grosgrain ribbon which also anchors the stitching that binds the inside blank pages to the journal. I used long and kettle stitching for the binding, visible on the journal spine. |

The pages of the journal are made
from "water-stressed" paper. To water stress I
hand tear each page along a straight-edge ruler to the
size of the cover. Then I dip the page in
acrylic-colored water for a few minutes. I hang
the page on a folding clothes rack to dry. I
personally like not only the look of water stressed
paper but also the sound and feel when I write on
it. A multi-sensory experience! |

I include out-of-context quotes from the
original book on several of the pages. These can be used as writing prompts. |

I copied my original
marker drawing onto cardstock and used it to line the
front and back covers and to reinforce the spine.

the last page is my unique signature medallion, which
also indicates the year I made the book. The journal has an attached beaded ribbon bookmark. |

include a paper bookmark listing the book's main
features. Dimensions of the journal are approximately 7.75" x 5.25" x 1.25". |
